when I was about 13 and going through my 'too goo for cleaning' phase my mother gave me a week to do my chores and then without ever saying a word got out trash bags and cleaned everything i was supposed to have done. My room and everything else was cleaned with the 'if it's touching the floor it's trash' theory and turned out spotless. She didnt give me my things back for over a week, and some of that was my homework and school stuff. And when I did get them back the trash from the kitchen and living room that hadnt been cleaned was mixed with my bedroom things. It made for an awful cleaning up experience and I never had another problem cleaning again. To this day at 17 years old I still clean the entire house (minus my mothers room and bathroom) without complaining or being told.

My parents did the same thing- everything in trash bag in the garage and I was SURE my stuff was going to go out on the curb! Maybe you could collect their stuff and charge them money for each thing back. And/or assign them each one cup, bowl, plate and set of silverware and therefore they must clean it in order to use it again. Sounds like they know what to do and are testing you, so do whatever you can to show them you mean business without a power struggle. Good luck!

I see by the comments there are some really good ideas. I like the one about buying back their things... great idea. mixing their trash with household trash also good... hmmm...
